1st Test: Pakistan vs England: Day 1 Review

The First test began with the long awaited announcement of the
team selection from England. Four or five bowlers? One or two spinners? Finn or
Tremlett? These were the main questions in focus. The team selected was: A
Strauss (C), A Cook, J Trott, K Pietersen, I Bell, E Morgan, M Prior (WK), S
Broad, G Swann, C Tremlett and J Anderson. An almost identical squad to the one
from their last test against India, except for Tremlett in for the injured Tim
Bresnan (elbow). Pakistan went for a slightly different approach with team
selection by including three spinners and only two spinners. The Pakistan team
were as follows, M Hafeez, T Umar, A Ali, Y Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (C), A Shafiq,
A Akmal (WK), A Rehman, U Gul, S Ajmal, and A Cheema. A very different side
from the one England played their last test against in 2010.

The highly anticipated event of the toss was won by England
captain Andrew Strauss who decided that his team would bat first. Umar Gul
opened the bowling for Pakistan with both of the England openers getting off
the mark during the first over; the score was 2/0 after the over was finished.
Aizaz Cheema opened the bowling from the opposite end and began with going for
3 runs. Spin was first introduced by the 6th over, with Misbah-ul-Haq
bringing Mohammad Hafeez into the attack. This risk paying off for the
Pakistani captain immediately with Hafeez removing Cook with the third ball of
the over. Cook went caught behind for 3 runs. Trott came into bat at number
three, and stayed in to make 17 runs before also being caught behind, but this
time off the bowling of Aizaz Cheema. Pietersen joined Strauss with the score
on 31/2. The leading wicket taker of 2011 was introduced to bowl the 19th
over, striking with the last ball of his over to remove the England captain for
19. Ian Bell came in at 4 but was removed first ball by Saeed Ajmal, a golden
duck for the man who averaged over 100 last summer. Pietersen was the next
batsmen to be removed, lbw to Ajmal for 2 runs. Morgan and Prior were now at the
crease together. Probably England’s best two players against spin. The pair
joined with the score on 43/5. Lunch came with the score on 52/5. England would
need to dig in deep after lunch.

Morgan and Prior returned to bat after lunch and made a
partnership of 39 before Morgan getting out lbw to Ajmal for 24. England’s
current highest and longest partnership. Broad joined Prior on 15. Broad became
Ajmal’s 5th victim of the innings by getting out lbw for 8, not even
the review system could save him. Swann then joined Prior to create the highest
partnership for England’s first innings of 57. Swann was bowled by Rehman for
34 and was replaced by Tremlett. Matt Prior reached his half century during the
62nd over off 115 balls with only 2 fours. Tremlett was removed in
the 67th over lbw to Ajmal for 1. Last man in James Anderson joined
Prior on 57*. England’s innings ended on 192 all out when Anderson was removed
by Ajmal for 12 runs. Matt Prior ended on 70 not out. A stand out innings from
him. The Pakistani bowlers finished on; Gul 12-4-35-0, Cheema 12-0-43-1, Hafeez
6-3-5-1, Rehman 18-5-52-1 and Ajmal with the outstanding figures of
24.3-7-55-7.

Pakistan’s innings began with James Anderson opening the bowling
with three slips and a gully. Anderson begins with a maiden. Tremlett also
opening the bowling. Strauss brings Broad into the attack to replace Tremlett
and opens with a maiden in the 8th over. Pakistan reached 31/0 after
10 over’s. Strauss brings Swann into the attack to replace Anderson and his
first over goes for four runs. Pakistan finish the day on 42/0, with Umar on
18runs off 42 balls and Hafeez on 22 runs off 49 balls. Anderson finished with
figures of 5-1-16-0, Tremlett with 30-13-0, Broad with 4-2-3-0 and Swann with
3-1-9-0.

Stand out players for each
team were; Saeed Ajmal for Pakistan and Matt Prior for England. The England
bowlers have a tough day tomorrow and will need early breakthroughs.

Happy New Year cricket fans & crickette friends

Happy New Year everyone! Have we all recovered from New Years Eve? I’m still struggling but ‘I’ve come a long way (baby)’ since not being able to lift my head off the pillow at midday! A big mac sorted that out eventually, even if it did mean delaying my diet by 24 hours!

We have big plans for Crickette over the next 12 months including #crickettesontour – you didn’t think we would miss TTO & co gracing our little island did you? Now just to think of a way to show our support without being carted away by security…………

Anyway if you are still celebrating – I’m impressed, if like me, you are trying to come back to civilisation before it is officially evening – try making a hazelnut latte macchiato – muchos goodness!

Pick on someone your own size!

Filed under: Morne Morkel,South Africa — Lady Giraffe @ 12:40 pm

I think we all know my views are subjective when it comes to TTO (the need to faint when he is on the screen is wearing off slightly as i approach 28 but i can still drool like the best!) but I wake up post boxing day to find people calling for him to be dropped from the team! I’m starting to see a pattern between ‘supporters’ and critics alike – Morne plays a blinder and it’s all ‘oooh he’s really backing up Steyn now’ , he has a slightly off game or doesn’t shine like a superstar – ‘off off off!’.

Now I want to point out here that I am fully a supporter of Steyn and this is NOT having a go at him – but didn’t Morne just get 2 more wickets that Steyn this innings? Did he or did he not contribute to getting the team out? Sure his economy rate wasn’t brilliant but if you don’t get the other team out your not going anywhere!

I also think the person that knows fully that it wasn’t his best performance is himself – I don’t think he needs the rest of you telling him! And furthermore I’d put money on the rest of you putting in a performance no where near as professional! The ‘armchair’ supporter syndrome! Isn’t this why they created Football Manager? When you are playing for your country 10 months a year, I’ll listen to your ‘criticism’ unless your a professional with a plastic face or elf ears’ then I’ll just point and laugh!

But hey like Simon Cowell said ‘people are talking about you, your life is more interesting to them than their own, take it, use it, roll with it’ –

but always know that we are behind you no matter what! Keep going, you know your game and we don’t do haters!

And if you want to diss TTO anymore, ill set the vicious ginger cat on you!

SA vs Aus – 2nd odi- Proud Of Biff

On Sunday was the second odi against australia in PE… South Africa batted first and our two opening batsmen where Hashim Ambla and Graeme Smith. Now it’s no secret that Graeme has been struggling with his form for sometime now and I’m sure that many of your’ll expected him to be the first one to get out but luck was on Graeme’s side this time and Hashim was the first to get out which brought Jacque Kallis to the crease. But I just want to talk about Graeme for abit..

A friend of mine described Graeme’s perfomance (before Sunday) like this ‘ it’s like his stuck on neutral and whenever he tries to get into gear one the car stalls, rolls back into neutral and switches it of’ n i know that he can get to gear 1 if he tried harder’ she said that the switching it of part = gets out but  On Sunday Graeme somehow found a way to shift to the next gear, making 57 runs before He got out. It was the reverse sweep that messed it up for him. Yes, I am aware that the reverse sweep is one of  Graeme’s favourite shots but that doesn’t mean that it’s always going to work for him.

It was exciting to watch graeme slap those 4′s n 6′s around but it was even better to see him make his 50+ runs, making all biffanatics really proud of him. Does this mean that Graeme has his form back or is getting his form back or as i like to say it..is getting his mojo back? I’d like to think so but we’ll just have to wait and see how he does in the next few matches.

Graeme and Kallis formed a prtnership of 100+ runs together which set the platform for South Africa. South Africa ended up with a total of 303 runs at the end of 50 overs. The result of sunday’s match : South Africa beat australia by 80 runs.  Man of the match : Morne Morkel (who bowled excellent on sunday)

Parnell and Theron saves the day

16th october was our second T20 .. Australia batted first and ended up with a score of 147 runs.. South Africa needed 148 runs to win. South Africa’s bowling was okay ..the two exspensive bowlers we had where wayne parnell and morne morkel… Morne Morkel was okay tho he just messed up abit in the last over n Wayne well he covered up for his bowling with the bat.. He scored an amazing 29 runs of 11 balls while Rusty Theron scored 31 runs of 16 balls.

Yup,it was a nail-bitting ending but it was one that was worth watching. At the end south africa neede 6 runs from 6 balls 2 win and theron was the man that hit the winning runs.. He hit a 6 which closed the game and made sa the winner.. we won with 3 wickets still remaining but he didn’t do it alone,he had the support from wayne parnell which helped him alot.

It was good to see our tailenders finishing it off and picking up a win for us but it was even better to see wayne parnell playing so well and another good thing was that those who called us chokers when we lost the first T20 where nowhere to be found..
We are proud of you guys, keep it up.
We’re proudly South African and we’re 100% behind you guys.

The C word needs to get the F out!

On 13th Oct was the clash that we’ve all been waiting for.. The proteas vs australia. I’m sure that by now everyone knows the result for that match.. sa lost. Yes it was sad that sa lost and we surely did not need the world to rub it in our faces by calling the fans n the players chokers.. i mean that’s just childish.

The ‘choker’ word has been goin around on twitter for a while now that it’s actually getting lame and boring. I have noticed that most of them that calls us chokers are india supporters. Let me say this now I got nothing against the india supporters or the team players but i do have a problem with those that call us chokers after we lose a match.

Like I said before the ‘choker’ word has become boring now so if your’ll can’t say anything else then the best thing for your’ll to do is to shut up. I like the saying that goes like this : If you got nothing nice to say then it’s best that you be quiet .. I think that your’ll need to learn from that and the next time somebody calls me the C word you can be sure that i’ll have another C and F word for you. It’s high time that the C word gets the F out of twitter and it’s about time that your’ll grow up and find something better to do.

India show who’s in charge

This has to be one of the most farcical days of cricket shown on sky sports! Im not the biggest fan of cricket being played in India – it can be tedious at times, but this just took the biscuit.

To start with we all knew they weren’t going to agree to the review system – and to be honest i’m getting bored of them standing in the way of a bit of excitement – it just makes me walk around the house saying ‘i don’t do change’ in my best OAP man impression!

Then minutes before the start of Sky broadcast twitter goes wild with broadcasting issues! There are no pictures as BCCI have an ‘issue’ with someone or something with whispers of money demands or there’s no showing the game. I followed this on twitter so I have no idea how much was true but I wasn’t in the best of moods when I sat in front of the tv. It hadn’t yet been resolved and we were left with Nick Knight & Bumble trying to commentate down the phone. This did bring a chuckle, especially with Bumble asking where Aggers was when you needed him! Ha ha

And then it happened – the pictures came on – but no English commentators………………… I gave it 30 mins, slapped myself awake and then got on with a post office run, cleaning the house and straightening my hair – I was THAT enthralled!

Many will disagree but it felt like I had been bullied into watching the way BCCI wanted me to and they were asserting their authority over little old me – a sky sport subscriber (this stuffs not cheap!).

And then India showed who’s boss on the field too!
